David Perez: Junior Sintra Champ.
Firstly, can you tell us about yourself?
Well, my name is David Pérez, I’m 17 years old and I’m from the Canary Islands, specifically in the north of Tenerife. I started surfing with my brothers and my uncle when I was about 8 years old and, from there, together with my sister Teresa Miranda we started practicing this sport in a more serious way.
How long have you been competing?
My first competitions were about 7-8 years ago, when I was around 10 years old. I started going with my sister Teresa to the local championships on the island and later to the Canarian circuit championships and national championships.
Can you express what it felt like to win the Junior Sintra Title?
It feels incredible and more seeing the very high level of riders in the category. Winning a world race has always been a goal for me and this achievement gives me extra motivation for the rest of the year and especially for the fronton king.
You only caught two waves in the final which was enough to get you the victory, was that a deliberate tactic to wait for the best waves or was it just luck?
I would honestly say that it was a mixture of both. Before the heat I was clear what waves I had to catch, I thought it was best to wait and only catch waves of high potential, this had a risk due to the delay of the sets. Luck therefore played an important role and turned in my favour giving me the wave of victory in the last seconds.
Which other young riders impressed you in the contest?
Most of the participants had a very high level but a surprise for me was Gabriel Casto, I had not heard of him and both in free surfing and in competition he showed a very high level. In addition, many of the boys at the ocean roots school showed a high level and a great future for those young boys.
What are your goals for the future in bodyboarding?
Right now my closest goal is the frontón king, I feel very motivated to fight for the junior title in a wave as prestigious as frontón. In addition, for the coming years I intend to travel the world as much as possible with the intention of improving my surfing, competing and recording to do some audivisual project.
I would like to thank all the people who have supported me, my family, friends and sponsors and infoamed for the interview.
