Fucking Lucky Poms!

Fucking Lucky Poms!

By Dan Dobbin.

Every Australian knows that hating the Poms is a national pastime.

However, as we learnt last year in our “England: A promised land? ” article, bodyboarders in Ol’ Blighty have so much good going on in their little booging scene we should envy them.

They have waves on demand in the comfortable, controlled environment of the Bristol Wavegarden pool. They don’t have to worry about the social stigma of not supporting bodyboarder owned wetsuit companies and can freely give their money to the faceless and soulless suits at the top of the Katmandu corporation as they purchase Rip Curl wetsuits by the armful. They enjoy too many sponsorship opportunities as companies line up to support any old Cornwall kook or kookette.

And now it seems that just like the epic videotape wars of VHS vs Beta four decades ago, they have not one, but two sources to choose between when looking for some fun and entertainment.  Two National Bodyboarding Association’s!

The United Kingdom Bodyboarding Association (UKBA) was formed in late December last year and last week dropped their official press release. Highlights include:

The UKBA is currently composed of 11 bodyboarders all serving a variety of roles on the committee.
The UKBA committee are all volunteers who fund their own membership costs and do not receive any financial remuneration for their work. Each of the committee members share the same passion for bodyboarding and the desire for it to be bigger, better and stronger.

The UK has not seen a competitive bodyboarding circuit since 2013 and the sport is currently adrift without cohesive organisation on a national level. The UKBA will run UK Nationals Championships in Autumn 2021, with a look at creating a full nationwide tour encompassing England, Wales, Scotland  and Northern Ireland UK by 2023″.

Fundamentally, the UKBA is an open, accessible and democratic organisation and as such welcomes collaboration and input from any and all UK bodyboarders, groups and clubs. The UKBA exists to help and support those who want to create clubs or run contests in their local area or region. The UKBA is an organisation built from the ground up by bodyboarders, for bodyboarders”.

UKBA is officially recognised by the International Bodyboarding Corporation (IBC) as its UK partner
with plans currently underway to host an IBC sanctioned World Tour event in the near future“.

An 11 person strong committee.

An upcoming nationwide tour.

A potential sanctioned World Tour event!

Fucking lucky Poms!

And if that’s not enviable enough, the Association Of United Kingdom Bodyboarders (AUKB) has also sprung to life in February of this year. The AUKB has released no official correspondence, but is already busy pumping out competitions and contests of their own, including a “State of the nation’s” video submission contest.

Fucking lucky, spoilt for choice Poms!

Still, it seems that everything may not be all sunshine, lollipops and wavepools between the two organisations.

Like any similar entities vying for public support and market share, there appears to be underlying hostility between the two organisations, highlighted by some bitchy social media action.

So what of the future?

Can one small island sustain two national bodies with simmering tension between them?

Will it all explode into internal violence and bloodshed in much the same way as the clashes between the Romans and the Celts, the Normans and the Anglo-Saxon’s, the English and the Welsh, the English and the Scots, the English and the Irish, the Protestants and the Catholics, the Cavaliers and the Roundheads, Manchester United and Liverpool supporters.

Those Poms sure can find a barney.

We’d like to think that just like the Videotape wars in the 1980’s, whichever side the porn industry chooses to support will come out on top.

UKBA 👄 or AUKB 💋
