Who’s a Selfish Prick?
Unfortunately, several reports of some of our brethren not acting in the new spirit of social responsibility needed to help contain the spread of Covid-19 have filtered into the Infoamed office over the weekend.
We all carry the almost maddening little selfish prick inside us that drives us to make sometimes irrational decisions in our desire to surf .
I’ve lied to my significant other, foisted my kids onto friends and family, pulled many a swiftly from work, slipped out the backdoor of a mates daytime wedding reception for a quick paddle.
I get it.
Fuck, I’m not even going to pretend I’m writing this article out of altruistic concern for the welfare and well-being of others.
The selfish prick inside of me that wants to be able to keep surfing through this Covid shit-show is telling all those other selfish pricks crowding up line ups and carparks, still traversing up and down the coast roads like it’s business as usual to knock it off or we’re all going to lose.
Spain, Portugal, France, South Africa, Israel, the U.K., the U.S., Honduras, Brazil….
Beaches closed. Surfing banned. Surfers arrested, heavy fines and threatened gaol time, even footage of a cop shooting at a surfer fleeing the water in Costa Rica.
This is the potential future we are staring at, unless we demonstrate a bit of nous with our actions.
There’s a great line from the original Jurassic park movie where Dr. Ian Malcolm, played by Jeff Goldblum, is talking about the ability to clone dinosaurs that runs “Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn’t stop to think if they should.”
The same is true for our current situation. Sure you can technically still surf 2ft Dbah with a hundred buddies, or have a special dispensation to travel over state borders that you can take advantage of and still cruise the highways chasing waves.
But what we can do, and what we should do, may now be diametrically opposed.
Ozzie comedian Jim Jefferies has an old bit in one of his routines about the need for gun control where he says ” We have to play to the 1% that are such fuckwits, they ruin it for the rest of us. We have to walk as slow as our slowest person to keep our society moving”
This is the logic the government will bring to bear if we don’t acknowledge that the society we live in has now changed.
If we don’t start self regulating our behavior and making smarter choices, the government will take the choices out of our hands all together.
Where legally down to just 2 person gatherings here on land, if we give them reason, restrictions in the ocean will be next.
And then none of us surf hungry pricks will be happy.
So don’t the rest of you fuck this up for me!
